Rooted in Purpose: Planting Trees and Growing a Better Future

Gardening begins with a simple act - planting something today with the hope that it will grow tomorrow. That same idea is at the heart of a larger mission: leaving the earth better than we found it.

This April, in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day, that mission takes on a deeper meaning. Through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, every purchase becomes part of a larger effort to restore forests, support wildlife, and invest in future generations.

A Shared Mission to Leave It Better

For those who spend time in the garden, caring for the earth isn’t just a hobby. It’s a mindset. It’s about nurturing growth, protecting what matters, and making choices that have a lasting impact.

That philosophy extends beyond the garden through a commitment to conservation. During the month of April, every shirt purchased plants one tree, increasing our everyday giving initiative of one tree for every $50 spent. Customers also have the option to deepen their impact by donating $3 to plant two additional trees.

It’s a simple way to turn everyday choices into meaningful action—working together toward a shared goal of protecting and restoring our planet.

Replanting Michigan’s Forests

The trees planted through this initiative are part of a large-scale effort to restore Michigan’s forestlands—areas that were heavily logged in the late 1800s and have since been the focus of long-term conservation work.

In partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this project focuses on replanting native stands of jack pine and red pine across state and nearby national forests. These efforts are supported through a Good Neighbor Authority agreement with the USDA Forest Service, allowing for coordinated forest management and restoration.

As these forests grow, they will do far more than fill the landscape. They will:

  • Capture carbon and support cleaner air
  • Improve water filtration
  • Restore natural ecosystems
  • Provide critical habitat for wildlife

This is long-term work - planting trees today that will shape the environment for decades to come.

A Future for Wildlife

One of the most meaningful impacts of this effort is the restoration of habitat for wildlife, including deer, turkey, and grouse. But perhaps most notably, it supports the continued recovery of the Kirtland's warbler.

Once on the brink of extinction, this small songbird has only recently been removed from the endangered species list thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. It depends on young jack pine forests for nesting making reforestation essential to its survival.

Planting trees today helps ensure that species like the Kirtland’s warbler will continue to thrive. It’s a reminder that even small actions can ripple outward, creating lasting change in the natural world.

Rooted in Purpose: Wear What You Believe In

For gardeners and nature lovers, what we wear can be an extension of what we value. Choosing clothing that reflects a connection to the earth—and a commitment to protecting it—turns everyday style into a form of quiet advocacy.

Collections like Rooted in Purpose bring that idea to life, offering designs that celebrate conservation, sustainability, and the beauty of the natural world. These shirts aren’t just about aesthetics—they’re a way to share a message, spark conversation, and inspire others to think more deeply about their relationship with nature.

They pair naturally with other nature-inspired pieces, from pollinator-focused bee designs to calming garden therapy styles, creating a wardrobe that reflects both personal style and environmental awareness.

Planting for the Next Generation

At its core, this initiative is about more than trees—it’s about legacy.

Every tree planted is an investment in the future. It’s shade that will be enjoyed years from now, habitat that will support wildlife, and a healthier environment for the next generation of gardeners, nature lovers, and caretakers of the earth.

It’s easy to feel like individual actions don’t make a difference. But forests are built one tree at a time. Change happens the same way—through small, consistent choices made with intention.

Growing Something That Matters

Gardening teaches patience, care, and the value of nurturing something over time. This initiative carries that same spirit beyond the garden, creating an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a simple, tangible way.

This April, every purchase becomes part of something bigger—a shared effort to restore forests, protect wildlife, and leave the earth better than we found it.

Because the best things we grow aren’t always the ones we can see right away. 🌱
